Daytona. March 1948

For years, from its inception in 1937 until the early ’60s, the prestigious Daytona 200 motorcycle race was run on Daytona Beach.
In 1948, LIFE magazine covered the races, both amateur and pro, at Daytona (the Road Course opened in 1936) and reported, in its April 19 issue, that “for four days last month the resort city of Daytona Beach could hardly have been noisier — or in more danger — if it had been under bombardment.”
Here are some rarely seen photos by Joseph Scherschel (brother of another LIFE photographer, Frank Scherschel) of a weekend that thrilled racing fans.
The 1948 event was marred not only by deaths and injuries but, as LIFE duly noted, by classic knuckleheadism. “Because the antics of an unruly minority reflect on the dignity of motorcycling,” the magazine observed, “the American Motorcycle Association may hire special police at future races. One duty will be to restrain sophomoric cyclists who amused themselves this year by tossing firecrackers into the crowd.”
155 motorcycles started, only 45 finished. Winning rider, Floyd Emde, averaged 84 mph and won the purse of $2,000. What LIFE failed to mention is that Emde (who was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998) won by the sliver-thin margin of 12 seconds; 1948 was the first time a rider led the race from flag to flag; and it was the last time an Indian Motorcycle won the 200.

A Van And A Panhead. And Some Van Bits

We spent the day stripping out some of the van interior and replacing it with my Panhead, a load of Dice magazines and merchandise and finally some of my clothes and all that. The whole lot is off to the shippers tomorrow. It should arrive in the UK at the end of April. Then all I have to do is deal with the wankers at customs and Bobs your uncle. It's going to be a busy year.

This is what came out of the van. If anyone wants it just let me know. It's free, all you got to do is come and pick it up from Glendale. What you get for your van is a back seat that folds into a bed with 3 cushions for the middle bit, a round table, a unit with 3 small and one large cupboard and a fridge. All good custom stuff. Mooneyes Yokohama 2012!

1. BORN FREE 4 (USA) BEST IN SHOW
On June 30, 2012, the motorcycle event "Born Free 4" will take place in Oak Canyon Ranch, California. We are excited to announce that the winning motorcycle from Born Free 4 will be brought to Japan for the YOKOHAMA HOT ROD CUSTOM SHOW 2012 (HCS2012)! The Born Free show has been the revival of high quality show bikes and authentic choppers. Builders across the USA have gravitated towards this event each year and it has been gaining in popularity each year. This year, the Best in Show will be here at HCS2012 for your viewing pleasure.

2. SPECIAL GUESTS FROM ABROAD
Each year at HCS, the main attraction has been the special guests from abroad. It's still early to know at this time but we are working on a list right now and will make an official announcement soon.

3. AIR-CQQLED IN ACTION - SPECIAL SECTION SPOTLIGHT
HCS2012 Car Show Special Section "Spotlight" (Previous years included "Slammed Zone" trucks etc.). This year we present a special section spotlight titled, "Air-CQQLED in Action" which will compile an area inside the car show space featuring air-cooled Volkswagens. Welcoming all styles in this spotlight area including slammed, old school, Cal-look, custom, race cars and more. The theme is "in action" and we want to assemble air-cooled VWs of all types!

4. EARLY DAYS CHOPPER EXTRAVAGANZA - SPECIAL SECTION SPOTLIGHT
Each year the Special Section Spotlight for motorcycles has changed, including SR, Multi and British Customs. This area for HSC2012 is titled, "Early Days Chopper Extravaganza" which will be focused on '60s and early '70s style choppers. With no set theme on machine type, it's wide open and promises to compile a full range of wild motorcycles! So what exactly is '60s & '70s style? It could be anything, it's doesn't have to be vintage, as long as it's styled to the theme of '60s & '70s! American, Japanese Domestic, British or European makes, it's possible! During this period, choppers were introduced in Japan, so of course Japanese bikers, customs and early days of choppers are also exceptional!

5. CUSTOM PAINT HUB CAP CONTEST (Size Up to 15")
Previous custom paint contests included fuel tanks and helmets. HCS2012 will be the third custom paint contest and the selected "canvas" is a hub cap (wheel cover). Of course, the contest is open to anyone willing to give it a try, professional painters to amateurs. Size limit of the hub cap is limited 15" but it can be just about any type of hub cap. Be creative and have fun, first with the selection of a hub cap!

6. 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEUCE - 1932 FORD
This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the 1932 Ford. Shows across the USA have been celebrating with excitement and now we will have a featured spotlight right here at HCS2012 for the Deuce.

7. HOT WHEELS CONVENTION
The Hot Wheels Convention held last year at HCS was so popular, they are back to do it again! The Hot Wheels Convention is back for HCS2012 and they have already started planning for the event too. Special announcements will made available soon. There will be a limited edition Hot Wheels for the event as well. Stay tuned for more!

8. CAR CLUB PLAQUE
Last year we had a special section titled, Car Club Plaque which encourage car clubs to enter together with their rides and create a group display. This year for HCS2012, we're bringing it back again! Calling all car clubs! Get ready for this year's show and enter together and represent your car club with pride and create a cool display. For those clubs that didn't get to enter last year, here is your chance this year! Or for the clubs that want to change it all around and have a different display, it's all up to you!

OTHER FEATURES AND SECTIONS
As with previous years, other features and sections include:

RAT ISLAND - Limited to Hot Rods & Kustoms built up to 1948.
The purpose of Rat Island is to bring together those vehicles that want to participate in the show but don't want to be displayed as a show car. This sectioned off area includes suede, traditional hot rods and kustoms with art, pinstriping and music together in one area. Vehicles must be mobile (running) and complete. The perimeter of Rat Island is fenced and within this area, entry vehicles are displayed together. Spectators to the show freely move around in this area and move about between the displayed vehicles. The vehicles are exposed to contact with people.

PINSTRIPE GATHERING
Situated next to the world of Rat Island's Rods & Kustoms, the Pinstripe Gathering is the artist's booths from Japan and beyond. Find your pinstriping needs here during the show or purchase original works directly from the artist themselves. You can also find pinstriping tools and paints. MOONEYES Wildman Ishii is in this area all day.

COLLECTIVITIES ALLEY
Within the private space of a 3m x 3m block, individual artists and artisans express their unique artistic skill or specialty shop showcase. A hot spot to see in person!

MINI CARS, MODEL CARS, PEDAL CARS
This area features scale models, die-cast customs, pedal cars and more.

and MORE MORE MORE!
Little Get Together Party, Live Music, Vendor Booths and so much more, fun for the entire family!
Don't forget, on the day of the show, be sure to come early because you want to be the first in the door to get a good view of the official start, the RIDE-IN and guest introductions which is the official kick off of the show and happens in the center aisle. Only happens once so don't miss it!

GB

My soul mate Nicke Svensson blew my mind when he gave me an S&S GB carb to run on my Panhead. It's one of 2 he had on his Knuckster motor that were sequential in numbers. The other one is in the good hands of my other life partner Brandon...as you can see here in this pic.
