The early 80's, London. There was this fantastic 'alternative' club scene going on which in fact was my whole life at the time. The Mud Club, The Dirt Box, Cha Cha's and The Beat Route to name but a few, with Jay Strongman on the decks mostly. You could go out nearly every night of the week, dance to some great music and generally have a brilliant time. This I did, much to my bosses dismay at the plumbing place where I worked on All Saints Road, W11. Good Times. Anyway, these 4 records were favs of mine and I wore the grooves out playing them to death. Although not heard much in the clubs they were certainly an off shoot of what was going on in those dark and exciting places. There was other vinyl of course but these are the ones that come to my mind instantly.

Mud Club was a favourite haunt for me at one point. And I though the beer was expensive back then- wait, it was... £3.50 for a pint! No wonder we got smashed at Henry Africas beforehand. Philip Salon where are you now you filthy old poof?
ReplyDeleteAh yes, Philip Salon, I was only just the other day wondering the same thing. So for me it was homemade snakebites using Holsten Pils before we went out, that usually got me through the night without having to buy a beer. The Dirt Box you had to bring your own drink so that was an easy one. A 6 pack of Red Stripe mostly.

ReplyDeleteDont no about the clubs but I had the vinyl, now gone of course, and in soho where I had my studio, it was the wag club.
ReplyDeleteEarly 80's - I was a teenager in LA getting The Face Magazine over by LAX and buying UK import singles in Hollywood. I read about all these places and wished I was there... by the time I got to London it was all over.
